JOB SUMMARY:
The Senior Strategist for Policy and Government Relations will lead our advocacy efforts and play a crucial role in influencing public policy at multiple levels. This position involves designing a comprehensive strategy aimed at effectively representing the organization’s interests while building and nurturing relationships with government officials, agencies, and key stakeholders. The Senior Strategist for Policy and Government Relations will also analyze legislative developments, ensuring that the organization can respond effectively to changes in the policy landscape and coordinate advocacy initiatives with both internal teams and external partners. The Senior Strategist for Policy and Government Relations will also be responsible for communicating policy positions clearly and persuasively to various audiences, ensuring that our objectives are well understood. Monitoring relevant legislation will be a key function of this role, and the Senior Strategist for Policy and Government Relations will provide timely updates and insights to senior leadership to inform decision-making. By fostering collaboration and strategic engagement, the Senior Strategist will enhance our ability to navigate the complex policy environment and advance our organizational goals.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Policy Development and Advocacy
• Calibrate with senior leadership to establish official policy positions, and generate policy statements, and responses.
• Develop and implement strategies to shape public policy and legislative outcomes in alignment with established policy interests and positions.
• Define the strategic direction for the organization’s advocacy efforts, determining strategic approaches for prioritized key issues.
• Train and deploy internal and external stakeholders and allies in support of advocacy efforts when appropriate.
Government Relations Management
• Build and maintain strong relationships with government officials, agencies, and industry stakeholders to advance organizational policy interests.
• Develop engagement strategies and tactics for effective interaction with key government representatives, including site-based and other events.
Strategic Analysis and Issue Management
• Monitor and analyze policy and regulatory developments, providing actionable insights and recommendations to senior leadership.
• Develop and execute strategies for managing emerging policy issues and respond to urgent situations as they arise.
• Facilitate org-wide calibration around the legislative process and critical policy initiatives directly impacting the organization’s mission and work.
Resource Management and Impact Assessment
• Allocate resources and manage the budget for advocacy activities, including oversight of consultants.
• Measure and report on the effectiveness of advocacy efforts in shaping public policy, including the quality of stakeholder relationships and success of strategic initiatives.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
• Bachelor’s degree (BA) in Business, Public Policy or related field from four-year college or university; master’s degree is preferred.
• 5 years of experience in policy development, government relations, or a related area.
• Proven ability to develop and implement long-term strategies for influencing public policy and government relations.
• In-depth knowledge of the political and regulatory environment, including familiarity with legislative processes, key policymakers, and industry dynamics.
• Exceptional ability to articulate complex policy issues clearly and persuasively to diverse stakeholders.
• Demonstrated track record of establishing and maintaining strong relationships with government officials, policymakers, and industry stakeholders.
• Strong analytical skills to assess policy impact, conduct research, and provide data-driven recommendations.
COMPUTER SKILLS:
• Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, and Teams
• Project Management tools (Asana, Microsoft Planner, etc.)
• Customer Relationship Management software (Salesforce)
